A disturbing article from the CEO  and Chairman of Gallup, Inc., Jim Clifton, via Zero Hedge:

The U.S. now ranks not first, not second, not third, but 12th among developed nations in terms of business startup activity. Countries such as Hungary, Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Sweden, Israel and Italy all have higher startup rates than America does.

We are behind in starting new firms per capita, and this is our single most serious economic problem. Yet it seems like a secret. You never see it mentioned in the media, nor hear from a politician that, for the first time in 35 years, American business deaths now outnumber business births.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the total number of new business startups and business closures per year — the birth and death rates of American companies — have crossed for the first time since the measurement began. I am referring…

Posting will be light/sporadic for a while

My 13 year old Rottweiler is very sick, haven’t been able to find out what’s wrong with him yet.

There’s a local vet that he goes to,who specializes in Rottweilers, used to breed and show them.

That’s where Rocky goes whenever he needs shots,a,check-up whatever.

They are going to run some more tests, take some x-rays,and try to find the problem.

Due to this-I will be spending a lot of time taking care of the dog,we may end up having to put him down, which would really suck,he’s been a great dog, little kids rode him like a horse, grandkids rode him like a horse, and he’s never even growled at a kid.

He chased a local cop onto the top of his car,he had stopped by to arrange a time for me to deliver a load of firewood to him,Rocky came running full blast from behind the house-the cops eyes bugged out-then the cop broke the light bar climbing up on his car-one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

Rocky’s not fat like most older Rottweilers,he still tosses rocks, bricks and cinder blocks around like they’re nothing, runs back and forth full speed on his 50′ run, goes for hikes in the woods with me and/or the kids.

When he’s outside playing in the woods,or tossing bricks around-everything seems fine-then he tries to get up after he’s been sleeping-one of his hips keeps going out on him,and it hurts him, because he whines-something he never did-not even after taking on a pack of coyotes. he had to get a bunch of stitches after that one-but the ‘yotes never came back around the house.

He’s also puking a lot,and he knows he’s not supposed to be pukin, pissin,or shittin in the house-he looks like it upsets him,he hangs his head after it happens.

He must think I’m mad at him-hell,I just want him to get better,I can mop up the puke-it’s on hardwood floors.

Just don’t want to see my buddy suffer-will get back to posting as soon as we figure out what’s wrong with Rocky, besides his hip.

Quick Post: Israeli dressing

Quick Posts are in response to questions asked by readers, that we think may be useful to the readership in general.

Question:

Would you please cover, in depth, the correct application of Gauze (in wound) Israeli dressing?

Please see this quick overview of TCCC from Max Velocity that discusses when to apply the dressing.  The questioner also expressed a desire to take a TCCC class; we would refer you to Max Velocity’s class here, Mosby’s class here. Should those not work out, you can look at the TCCC courses offered by the NAEMT (National Association of EMTs).

Then see the following video for details on how to apply it.

Thank you for setting up this site, having people with actual, real world experience is always a big plus, and you guys can separate the garbage from what’s useful and relevant as far as stuff that’s been posted on the interwebz.

open

Hogwarts School of Grid-Down Medicine and Wizardry is open for business, and we welcome you.

OK, so this is not an actual, accredited school, nor is it a business (yet). But it is a blog developed by Doc Grouch, and Ivy Mike for the citizen concerned with medical care in a grid-down scenario.

You are encouraged to read our disclaimer right away to understand what we are AREN’T trying to do, and to acknowledge the fact that this is still just two guys on the Internet publishing things.

That being said, we will be focusing on wilderness first aid and related activities, because without the magic of fossil-fueled transportation, logistics, first-world security, electricity, running water, and flushing toilets, the medicine can get pretty primitive, pretty fast.

We don’t plan on inventing a lot of new content, but using what we think is the best of what has been created…

More Than Half of Deer in NE Ohio Infected by Feral Cats

Posted: January 10, 2015 by gamegetterII in Uncategorized

Deer hunters in areas with large feral cat populations are being encouraged to thoroughly cook their venison to avoid danger of infection from a parasite. According to an Ohio State University study published in the journal EcoHealth, researchers took tissue samples from 444 deer and 200 free-roaming cats in the greater Cleveland area. Sixty percent of the deer and more than 65 percent of the cats tested positive for Toxoplasma gondii, the parasite that can infect humans with toxoplasmosis. This disease causes flu-like symptoms, brain or eye damage, and possibly schizophrenia and suicidal behavior in humans, according to Cleveland.com.

The parasite can infect all warm-blooded animals, but members of the felid (cat) family are its primary hosts. It is deposited on the ground along with cat feces and can remain infectious for up to 18 months.

Other studies have shown whitetails in Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Mississippi to be infected with toxoplasma gondii. Urban deer have been shown to have three times the odds of being infected as deer in suburban areas, probably because of the greater density of free-roaming domestic cats around cities.

Time for a year round open season on feral cats.

Here’s a feel-good revenge piece out of the Sunshine State. After each trip, charter guide C.A. Richardson (who I fished with years ago…good guy) would wash the salt off his tackle and let it dry in his fenced back yard. Over the course of 5 weeks, he estimates that about $5,000 worth of tackle grew legs in the middle of the night. So he hung up a trail cam. It didn’t take long for him to capture photos of the trophy-class moron that was nicking his stuff. After he got the shots, he posted them on FaceBook, and learned the name of the 15-year-old culprit in no time. The police are now on it.  I give C.A. credit for handling it like a gentleman. Some people I know would have gotten the name and paid the kid a visit to see if he liked baseball equipment as much as fishing tackle.

A pair of bills filed in each house of South Carolina’s legislature aim to eliminate the zero-tolerance attitude towards guns in schools by allowing or even mandating gun safety and Second Amendment-related curricula.

State Rep. Alan Clemmons, who introduced the House bill, says he was inspired to act by the story of a student who was arrested at school over a fictional essay he wrote in which he talked about buying a gun to kill a neighbor’s pet dinosaur. The zero-tolerance attitude towards guns in schools, Clemmons argues, is undermining knowledge of, and respect for, the Second Amendment.

“We are giving short shrift to the one amendment that protects all others,” Clemmons told The Greenville News.

Under Clemmons’ proposed bill, one-third of an existing nine-week educational unit dedicated to the U.S. Constitution would now be centered on education related to the Second Amendment, including textual analysis as well as…
