Ukraine Is Building Armored Battle Buses

Posted: November 24, 2014 by gamegetterII in Uncategorized

Here’s how a post-Soviet military improvises when it gets into a war it never prepared for.

The Ukrainian army is fielding armored battle trucks that look like something from Mexico or Kurdish Syria. Known as Raptors, the new trucks are for Ukrainian national guard troops fighting pro-Russian separatists in the east.

There are several versions, though they’re all based on six-wheeled KrAZ trucks—except covered in armored glass and plates capable of stopping 7.62-caliber machine gun rounds. The trucks should also keep their occupants protected from mines that weigh up to 13 pounds.

Plus, the Raptor can shoot on the move. The trucks have room inside for up to 24 soldiers and gun ports for about half as many.

It’s an example of Ukraine’s ever-more-improvised army. Add it to the list of crowdfunded hardware and radio-controlled hobby planes to quadrotor drones—a low-cost means of artillery reconnaissance.

When Ukraine’s army mobilized in the spring to fight the separatists, troops who couldn’t hitch a ride in armored vehicles rode into battle inside soft-skinned cars, buses and armed, camouflaged pickup trucks known as technicals.

This put the soldiers at grave risk from ambushes—if the separatists could catch them inside their vehicles.

The Ukrainians are repeating the same process the American military went through in Iraq and Afghanistan. Lightly-armored Humvee vehicles proved extremely vulnerable to improvised explosives, so the Pentagon pumped out thousands of wheeled, up-armored MRAP trucks.

In the news again after her recent arrest for packing in heat, I wonder I wonder how Mrs. Nasheedis feeling this morning about all of her anti-2nd Amendment votes in Missouri over the past few years?

65451ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-Missouri State Senator Jamilah Nasheed became a victim of violence in the city of St. Louis. Just after midnight Saturday, Nasheed tweeted that she had just had a gun pointed at her while getting out of her car.

St. Louis police released a report on the incident. A man approached the 41-year old after she had parked her car outside her home in the 4000 block of Olive. The suspect pointed a gun at Nasheed, demanding her keys. She refused and…

From Justin Raimondo, at antiwar.com:

If the revelations of Edward Snowden didn’t convince you that we’re living in a police state, then Sharyl Attkisson’s book, Stonewalled: My Fight for Truth Against the Forces of Obstruction, Intimidation, and Harassment in Obama’s Washington, is the clincher. Indeed, it is more convincing insofar as the reporting that came out of Snowden’s disclosures never definitively demonstrated how such powerful technology in the hands of unrestrained government has led to the targeting of political opponents by government officials. In Attkisson’s book, the ultimate Orwellian nightmare comes true….

It’s 3:14 in the morning when Sharyl Attkisson – star CBS reporter – is wakened by a noise: her computer has come to life, unbidden – again. It’s been happening a lot lately: and it’s not just her desktop Apple. The other night her Toshiba laptop clicked on all by itself. And her phones are so afflicted…

I was watching Glenn Beck last night and he had the above picture up on the screen. He asked the question “Is this who we are?” Of course his answer was no, as he is trying to keep as much distance between himself and potential violence as possible.

My answer was an immediate “You’re damned right that’s who we are.”

We are not a nation of peaceniks no matter how many pinch faced liberals claim that we are. We are a nation born of revolution. We are boiled down from the genetic stock of the misfits of Europe; the people who would not bow down or submit and risk fortune, life and family to be free.

Americans always have been, and hopefully always will be, different from Europeans. Instead of submission to religious or royal tyranny our ancestors chose harsh and dangerous freedom. When that tyranny reached across the ocean…

It’s late, my brother is coming over, and I’ll have a fairly full plate tomorrow too, so the next post will wait a while.

In the meantime, inspired by a number of comments, missions.  it’s a lot easier to plan a ‘space if you have a decent idea of what you want to do with it.  Here we go with a few:

Radios.  It was pointed out communications is important, and transistor radios in the bands we like aren’t too hard, and don’t necessarily need microchips.  Thoughts?

Vehicles.  Lots of stuff you’re not gonna wanna lug on your back in the quantities needed, so making sure you have other ways to get around is important, and that means being able to fix stuff.

Guns.  From clearing jams to armorer level maintenance and making parts.  Also fancy munitions, napalm, explosives, etc. when the time comes.

Food.  Helping the poor unfortunate souls…

With discussion of “patriot spaces,” what kind of venue would you look at for such a thing?  Would you want a more rural setting?  How important would a range be to have?  The focus would be more on the back end of the spear, so consider that we have access to plenty of training in arms and maneuver elsewhere, so no sense in reinventing the wheel, unless necessary.

potential missions:

fabrication equipping and training.

gardening/farming education and support.

communications hub, possibly with HAM and other radio repeaters, maybe even a low power AM or FM station, servers linked with other spaces to help provide secure internet and data storage.

belt fed potato guns.

We’ve all heard of kickstarter.  How many people would get on something like that and donate to help set up a “patriot space” in their area?  How many areas would find it reasonable, with a good $20,000…

A reality check for the anti-GMO, anti-vaccine folks

Posted: November 14, 2014 by gamegetterII in Uncategorized

Despite our culture’s reflexive reverence for things that are “natural,” we should all be mindful that just because something is “natural” does not necessarily mean that it is good.

The word “natural” has deep cultural and psychological cachet, and the association of nature with goodness has been a recurring idea throughout human history — especially during times of rapid scientific and technological change: at the height of the Hellenistic period in classic Greece, for example, Aristotle and his disciples were parsing the pros and cons of “appeals to nature”; as the Industrial Revolution took root in the 19th century, leading thinkers like Henry David Thoreau rejected industrialism by founding the back-to-nature Transcendentalist movement.

Meanwhile, in our supermarkets, “natural” foods are a more than $40-billion-a-year industry, despite the word “natural” having literally no meaning in this context. Consumers often opt for “natural” medicines, which they believe will have fewer side effects, even though those drugs are under-regulated. And whether or not shoppers know what “GMO” stands for, they are nonetheless inclined to avoid eating “genetically modified organisms” — which makes a certain kind of sense, except that humans have been genetically manipulating our food supply from the dawn of civilization; our methods have just gotten more sophisticated. Agriculture itself is an unnatural innovation.

Now we are facing a public health crisis in Southern California because well-meaning parents are electing to not vaccinate their children. There are numerous socio-cultural reasons why parents make this choice, but it usually comes down to concern about the safety of the vaccines and a preference for more “natural” health solutions. These parents are not wrong in their assessment that vaccines are, in some ways, unnatural: no amount of scientific research or reassurance can change the reality that vaccines are complex chemical cocktails that combine natural and synthetic elements that are then injected directly into children’s bodies.

Unfortunately, the natural result of avoiding vaccines and other unnatural advances in public health is the outbreak of preventable diseases. With whooping cough and measles making a comeback, it’s worth remembering that in the recent past, the average American only lived till what we now consider middle age, and parents in industrialized Western countries could expect to lose 1 in 5 children by the child’s first birthday. Is that really something we should aspire to?

And yes, it is true that vaccination isn’t the only cause for our country’s dramatically improved health, but it is the only cornerstone that remains controversial. After all, one of the 20th century’s other great public health advances was the proliferation of clean water and sanitation — but nobody seems to have a problem with the unnaturalness of indoor plumbing.

Former Seattle Sonics and Oklahoma City Thunder player Robert Swift was charged with unlawful possession of a short-barreled shotgun after police raided the house where he was living, SeattlePI.com reports.

According to police, Swift had a grenade launcher and a sawed-off shotgun in his room at the home of Trygve Bjorkstam, a 54-year-old alleged heroin dealer.

Swift told law enforcement that he was a heroin user but not a dealer, police say. Bjorkstam allegedly told police Swift was not helping him sell drugs.

The house is 100 yards from an elementary school, reports SeattlePI.

From the report:

Known to police as ‘Trigg,’ Bjorkstam admitted to dealing heroin and meth, and to building a gun range in a bunker he dug under his home to house a marijuana grow, a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent said in court papers. Police describe Bjorkstam, 54, as dejected and contrite following his arrest.
