Posting schedule…

Posted: December 5, 2014 by gamegetterII in Uncategorized

Posting will be sporadic and at various times until 12/8 due to Ohio deer hunting season which started 12/1 and ends 12/7-unless I tag a buck prior to 12/7.

Most of the deer I’ve taken with crossbow or compound bow have only gone 20-30 yards after being hit-seems only the ones shot with rifles or shotgun slugs run for 50+ yards after being shot.

No longbows for deer hunting? Or Illegally taking the Queen’s deer?
How restricted are shotguns there? It would be really lousy if you couldn’t use a shotgun, when the finest shotgun maker in the world is in London-Purdey-not that I can afford one,but I did get the chance to hunt ruffed grouse, quail, and pheasant with one. Amazing craftsmanship.

  2. Keep your ammo dry and barrel clean.
    Happy shooting!

I got him-switched to muzzleloader because shotgun has a red dot scope on it,which is lousy at ranges greater than about 30-40 yards. I passed on a decent buck because the dot in the red dot scope obscured most of the deer’s shoulder area, and I didn’t feel comfortable taking the shot.
My inline muzzleloader is good out to 250 yards or so,I’ve got a 3x9x50 scope on it which is great for low light conditions, which is when we see the most deer-sunrise and sunset.
      100 grains of powder-(20 50 gr Pyrodex pellets)-a .45 caliber,240 grain JHP bullet with a .50 caliber sabot.
Shot him at about 40 yards, bullet pretty much liquified the lungs, and went through the heart.
He still ran 50-60 yards, and died in a creek. heavy deer-he’s right around 200 # after field dressing.

      • Died in a creek?
No doubt a full one, cold and wet.
A sort of deers final “up yours” for taking him out. LOL.

Nice to read about the muzzleloader.
Makes a change from the 7mm “i shot him from 3 miles” tales.

WE can only use shotgun, muzzleloaders,or rifles that are chambered for straight walled cartridges.
I sold the 45-70 that I had,so no longer have a rifle chambered for a straight walled cartridge. I have an older sidelock/percussion cap muzzleloader, and a newer inline that uses a 209 shotshell primer, rather than a percussion cap.
The inline is great, because I can use the bullet and sabot, which is much more accurate than the sidelock with a round ball.
I bowhunt more than anything, and will be back to that soon,I can still legally take 2 does. One more will be enough meat for us for a year though.

The creek was full and deep, but his hind legs were in shallow water, didn’t even get my feet wet.

      • Lucky you.
Here the (illegal) hunter uses either snares or crossbows.

I say illegal because only the few (usually the rich or big business) are allowed to hunt the Queens deer.

Anyway shotguns are too noisy, cartridge rifles are too restricted by law, and street legal air guns have no where near enough power (typically 12ftlbs).

They also tried to ban harsh language but it was considered too racial an issue. 🙂
