Success, at its most fundamental, is survival and reproduction. And the fundamental key to success is learning. By learning I obviously don’t mean the process that occurs in Western educational facilities, which are devoted to ensuring their students’ most fundamental failure. Instead, learning means gaining an accurate environmental awareness and using this comprehension to mitigate threats and capitalize on resources and opportunities. A child learns to differentiate between a venomous snake and a kitten, or a hot stove and a pillow. But if his parents instead teach him bears like to cuddle, or that he should blow his hair dry in the bathtub, then his true learning process will be unpleasantly abrupt.

Of course learning also means learning from our mistakes. Few patients will anymore tolerate a healthy bloodletting by their physicians. Serving guests from lead crockery is no longer proper etiquette. And wintertime military campaigns to take Moscow have…
