The Only Issue That Matters by Robert Gore

Robert Gore's avatarSTRAIGHT LINE LOGIC

The most radical idea in human history is that might does not make right. For centuries the contrary tenet has held brutal sway. History book are chronicles of rulers and ruled, conquests, empires, and inevitably, failure and collapse. If people’s histories had been written by the forerunners of Howard Zinn, they would have detailed lives of subjugation and misery. The common folks were fodder for their rulers, who exercised first claim on their lives and property. The only checks on power were the occasional insurrection or military defeat, but the new boss was usually the same as the old boss.

The printing press was probably the most significant invention in human history. At the time (1439), the concept of individual rights was heresy, treason, or both. Its fragile shoots first poked through during the Reformation and grew during the Renaissance and Enlightenment. Europe’s clergy and aristocracy, their entitlements supposedly granted…

The Watch- Everyone is a Suspect

Over at the Huffington Post, ACLU fellow Samia Hossain has a so-absurd-it’s-humorous rundown of Amtrak’s “indicators of criminality.” Amtrak tells its employees (and customers) that passengers exhibiting such behaviors “should immediately be reported to trained law enforcement personnel.” They include:

  • Unusual nervousness of traveler
  • Unusual calmness or straight ahead stare
  • Looking around while making telephone call(s)
  • Position among passengers disembarking (ahead of, or lagging behind passengers)
  • Carrying little or no luggage
  • Purchase of tickets in cash
  • Purchase tickets immediately prior to boarding

As is often the case with war-on-terror excesses, there’s a drug war antecedent here. The Supreme Court, for example, has given customs officials enormous leeway in identifying and detaining suspected drug couriers coming into the country, finding that the government need only “reasonable suspicion” before agents can stop you, detain you, interrogate you, seize and search your phone or laptop or even hold you in a room until you defecate. In his book “Lost Rights,” the journalist and libertarian activist James Bovard listed some of the signs the courts have approved as showing “reasonable suspicion.” Among them:

  • Being the first person off a plane
  • Being the last person off a plane
  • Someone authorities believe has tried to blend in to the middle of exiting passengers
  • Booking a nonstop flight
  • Booking a flight with a layover
  • Traveling alone
  • Traveling with a companion
  • People who appear nervous
  • People who appear “too calm”
  • Merely flying to or from a city known to be a major thoroughfare in the drug pipeline

Bovard has some more on the suspected drug courier-terrorist connection here.

“Also ask yourself, do you want to live with a hairy woman, with brown patches, oily hair, and flaky skin. If not then buy this book.”

Outstanding point !

Good idea to get the book for the women you know who refuse to store even a weeks worth of food and a couple months of personal hygiene supplies.

Bonus on storing tampons-they work great for bullet wounds-or any other wound that’s bleeding profusely.

The full title of the book is “Emergency Survival Hygiene, A “Cookbook” for Essential Cleanliness and Survival Hygiene Care. It is by Survivor Jane, I assume that is a pseudonym or maybe her mother was a prepper too.

The book is jam packed with everything a female would need in an apocalyptic situation. It is also about general hygiene and so it is important that way, but women’s needs are more complicated so it does fill a unique nitch.  In many cases men take the lead in prepping and don’t know what women really need and are likely not putting in place those things.  Many women may not have thought through what they might need and want when the SHTF. Reading this book will help.

If you are a female prepper then read this and then pick your preps.  If you are a male and your wife refuses to prep…

Read the whole thing-and read this…
“Here’s an excerpt from a very long article on Stoicism. Feel free to read the whole thing if you have the time or inclination.”

I would change that to read the entire long article.

Find the time to read the suggested piece on stoicism-it’s well worth reading.

The guy clearly rode the short bus full of window lickers to school-hence the title of the post.

A 33-year-old man pulled into his St. Mark Avenue driveway about 2 a.m. Thursday. A 32-year-old man, later identified as Rayshawn Scott, walked briskly up to his window with his hands behind his back.

“What’s up now!” Scott said, swinging his hands around to reveal an eight-and-a-half inch butcher knife, according to the report.

As Scott moved the knife toward the driver’s face, the driver reached into his waistband as if he was pulling out a gun, hoping to scare the man off, according to police.

Scott lowered the knife and ran into an idling Ford Taurus and drove away. When police officers arrived, they found Scott sitting in the Taurus on a lawn of the house directly across the street.

The knife lay on the passenger seat of the running car, the report said. Police arrested Scott. He is charged with driving under suspension, driving while intoxicated and driving on a sidewalk or lawn.

“Editorial demagoguery against “predatory” lending might well be called predatory journalism — taking advantage of other people’s ignorance of economics to score ideological points, and promote still more expansion of government powers that limit the options of poor people especially, who have few options already.”

Africa’s most-populous country, Nigeria, which had 20 Ebola cases and eight deaths. Lagos, with some 21 million residents, is the continent’s biggest city.

In addition, 49 percent of Lagos state’s population lives in poverty in slums with little sanitation. Making matters worse is that doctors discovered an Ebola case in Port Harcourt, another extremely poor area where the majority of people live in shanties with almost nonexistent sanitation (keep in mind, the disease is spread by bodily fluids).

And it was not just lives at risk. As FP reported in August, an outbreak in Nigeria had the potential to devastate West Africa’s economy.

The WHO called it a “spectacular success story” that prevented “potentially the most explosive Ebola outbreak imaginable.”

ccording to the WHO, the public-health community knew an outbreak in Nigeria was a potential disaster. As soon the first case was discovered, the WHO, the CDC, and other government officials “reached 100 percent of known contacts in Lagos and 99.8 percent at the second outbreak site, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria’s oil hub.”

Isolation wards were then created, followed by treatment facilities. People who tried to escape were digitally tracked and returned to isolation. Doctors Without Borders and the WHO quickly trained local doctors to treat the disease. And while Nigeria’s public-health system is poor, it’s not nonexistent; aid groups have been working to eradicate polio there for years.

In an interview with Time magazine, Faisal Shuaib, a doctor at Nigeria’s Ebola Emergency Operation Center, also said that stopping public panic was instrumental.

“People began to realize that contracting Ebola was not necessarily a death sentence,” Shuaib said. “Emphasizing that reporting early to the hospital boosts survival gave comfort that [a person] has some level of control over the disease prognosis.” Shuaib added that keeping Nigerian borders open — the opposite of a strategy being thrown around in Washington right now — helped to contain panic.

On the other hand, the United States has done almost the complete opposite of Nigeria. It took 11 days to diagnose Thomas Eric Duncan with Ebola after he was turned away from a hospital six days after the Liberian’s arrival in Dallas.
