At the local Hamfest, I picked up these two gently used VX-5Rs for S25 each, with chargers. For those that don’t know, they’re a 5W tri-band HT (6m, 2m, 440) and is also a nice wideband communications receiver. They’re also waterproof, fairly rugged, and simple to use. For $25 each, used. Compare that to what $25 normally buys new. All they need is a programming cable, and we’re GTG. Behind them is a book of very useful knowledge for anyone wanting to build a signals collection and intelligence section. Another guy was there selling used Maxon EMCOM HTs for $10 a pair. With a little looking around and talking to folks, finding good equipment is pretty easy. Another friend not that long ago acquired an excellent Kenwood TS-440 with power supply and tuner for $400, squaring his HF needs away for a fraction of what it would cost new.

toomanyradiosAs with firearms, all too often Survivalists/Militia folks have a hard time separating what they need from what they want, or try to cover way too many bases, resulting in cutting off the nose in spite of the face. Do you think the guy in the picture is effective with all this? (I know it’s meant to be a joke, but we all know THAT guy.)

For those who’ve been in the game a while, a few questions always seem to come up among new folks, along with the most common answer:

  1. How much range will I get with this? Well, that depends.
  2. I like the looks of this one radio- Can I do everything I want to do with this? Well, that depends.
  3. Once I buy this, is it all I’ll ever need? Well…that depends.

I get it. We’re all human, this stuff can get expensive in a…

recon radio.pngNotice the little stake in the corner of the radio set? That’s a grounding stake. It’s important.

A radio system works by creating an electrical path to transmit its energy. Taking into account simple electrical theory, the radio as a system needs a ground to most efficiently transmit its energy and to reduce static buildup in your set which will in time damage your equipment and can shock you. This is especially important if you’re using less than optimum antenna systems, leading to high Standing Wave Ratios, or SWR, which is energy returning to the set along your feed line, and is not radiated. In addition, having a good ground eliminates sources of noise that may otherwise be mistaken for harmful interference.

If you’re running QRP, this is a big deal as you need every little bit of juice possible getting out to efficiently communicate. For 100w or more, this…

99% done with the flooring job from hell, just have to go back and install transitions in doorways, and where new laminate floor butts up to ceramic tile kitchen floor-because it would make too much sense to ship them with the flooring like I asked them to do.

Been working on the flooring job from hell all day every day, then going to one of the daughter’s new-(to her and son-in law)- houses and working on it till 10,11,midnight,1 am etc.

The kids new house also involved flooring-at least it was just sanding down and re-finishing the original hardwood floors that were installed in 1929.

The “upgraded wiring” was nowhere near upgraded, and whoever it was that hid where/how they tied new romex wire into old knob and tube wiring to make it look like all the wiring had been upgraded was very creative-maybe devious is a better word.

They fooled the original building inspector for the “upgraded wiring” in 1986,and the inspector the kids hired to satisfy bank a few weeks ago.

Thought I had found all the wiring issues a couple weeks ago-but noooo, kept finding more. Fishing new wire from basement to attic or attic to basement-however you want to describe it in a house with plaster and lath walls that has blown cellulose insulation in the walls was an adventure. Had to get new wiring to 2nd floor bedrooms and bathroom from attic,so I could run new wire down interior walls, and between joists to ceiling lights.

Turning the 3 second floor bedrooms into one really big bedroom and one small guest bedroom was the easy part.

Just have one more light coat of poly to put on floors in the morning, then make multiple trips hauling tools and equipment back home.

Rest of our materials for flooring job from hell will arrive Thurs morning-just one load of tools to haul home from that one.

Then,it’s back to normal-no more jobs from hell ’till early July.
