Six Degrees Of Ebola – For The Geographically Challenged

As one hilarious wisecracker posted elsewhere yesterday when I added that Mali had gotten on the Ebola Scoreboard, “Oh God! Not Mali!!! {runs to Wikipedia}

Which is fair, funny in a 7000-miles-from-me way, and a reasonable observation.
Fair enough; not everyone liked maps since they were little kids.

The problem is this:
When Ebola was (more-or-less) contained in one country, it was “just another small potatoes Ebola outbreak” in equatorial Africa. Quick flare, bodies, and poof! it’s over.
But instead, it travelled by bus and taxi to the densely populated slums of the capitol, and crossed two (and later three, out of six) of the neighboring borders. And then proceeded to those densely crowded capitol’s slums, and we’ve been off to the races trying to catch it – and abysmally failing – every day since then. That’s precisely why it’s now A Big Thing.

And now it’s gotten to Mali (pop. 16M+). Nearly as many people in one country as there are in the other three combine. Carried there by a two-year-old, and her loving idiot grandmother, on public busses, straight to the capitol of Mali (Bamako, pop. 1.8M), and its teeming slums.

Clever people will notice a pattern.
(And arguably, most of Africa is a teeming slum.)And with Mali doubling down on teh Stoopid, it bears noting that it shares borders with four additional countries not previously at risk, and the president of that landlocked nation has officially announced that they won’t be closing their borders at all.In more obvious terms, this is like deciding, in the midst of a forest gloriously aflame, to build your house out of gasoline cans, and pointing fireworks at your neighbors’ houses as well.
And then storing kegs of gunpowder inside that house.

We aren’t losing to Ebola because we don’t know how to stop an epidemic.

We’re losing because no one is willing to do it.
It’s too hard.
Too politically unpopular.
Too inhumane to those trapped in the Hot Zone.
Simply too damned mean.
And the “leaders” around the world, top to bottom, are simply too craven and too stupid to take the most obvious and basic epidemiologic steps to contain the spread.

So instead, we’re going to kill the entire world. With kindness.
And wish on a unicorn, and think of butterflies and puppies, while we pray for miracles.

What’s desperately and unpalatably called for is some tough love.

But everyone involved is too squeamish to come out and do what necessity demands, and instead, they’re all diddling themselves, and will continue to do so, until nothing, not even the most draconian measures, will then avail.

And for the perennial pollyanas, who’re sure that the outbreak in Mali won’t spread, and the case in NYC won’t spread: That’s what they said when it was just in Guinea. And when it was just in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. And when it was just in Dallas.
Nota bene, dumbasses, that it’s come to the U.S. twice already, skipping over 87 intermediate stops, because international jet travel, and clever government inattention, incompetence, hubris, and childish magical thinking.
It’s a free country: wait for it to personally bite you in the ass at your own peril.
I promise to laugh at your plight from afar, come the day.

I say yet again:

Y.O.Y.O. – You’re On Your Own.

Make appropriate personal preparations, while you yet have the time and wherewithal.
When things go to shit everywhere, as they continue to do like a Chinese water torture, drip by drop, that option will not exist for you, or for anyone else.

Time to top off all of your supplies people. Make sure you have enough food, water, ammo,a means of filtering and disinfecting water-as in bleach and/or pool shock-plenty of medical supplies, including some PPE in case you have to be anywhere near anyone infected with Ebola. read up on donning/doffing said PPE-that’s been covered by a lot of bloggers, those who know what they are talking about posted links to Medecines sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders protocols and procedures-I posted it,WRSA posted it,Raconteur Report posted it-go to the link, read up on the stuff-just in case.
Your best bet should Ebola explode in the U.S. is to get as far away from the cities as you can-if you have to stay in a city-be prepared to stay at home for up to 6 months-possibly longer.

As Aesop said-“Y.O.Y.O. – You’re On Your Own.

Make appropriate personal preparations, while you yet have the time and wherewithal.
When things go to shit everywhere, as they continue to do like a Chinese water torture, drip by drop, that option will not exist for you, or for anyone else.”

I would do so now-not next week, not when there’s more cases of Ebola here. Once there’s a lot of cases here-people will panic, and grocery stores will be emptied-there will be no food for you to stock up on at that point.

We’ve all been warned-anyone not ready for this shit who had the means to prepare for it deserves to get Ebola.

If you have neighbors who want to stock up,but do not have the funds for whatever reason-help them out-buy them a couple bags of rice and some dried beans every time you go to the grocery store, give them whatever you can afford to give them-they do not deserve to die due to government incompetence.

In the weeks since we last reported on media attempts to tie NRA to the Ebola crisis because of our opposition to the nomination of Dr. Vivek Murthy as surgeon general, the anti-gun echo chamber has continued to promote this absurd line of argument. Absent most of the coverage is a forthright discussion of NRA’s legitimate concerns with the nominee, or any evidence that Murthy himself has a singular ability to effectively handle the nation’s Ebola response.

NRA opposes Dr. Murthy’s nomination for the very reason that he has a history of exploiting his status as a medical practitioner to advance a purely political agenda of extreme and unproven gun control measures. In January 2013, Dr. Murthy signed two letters sent from his organization Doctors for America (formerly Doctors for Obama) to Vice President Joe Biden and Congress, advocating for stringent gun controls. The letter to Congress advocated for a ban on popular semi-autos and their ammunition, limits on ammunition purchases, firearm owner licensing, and a mandatory waiting period of at least 48 hours. The letter also expressed a desire to leverage the resources of the Centers for Disease Control to provide data for gun control efforts. Such proposals are of obvious import to gun owners. Moreover, as surgeon general, Dr. Murthy would have the ideal platform to direct the nation’s public health apparatus towards redefining firearms ownership as a disease, a tactic that Congress has curbed with funding limits since the 1990s, but one President Obama hopes to reinvigorate.

This little gem at the end of my rant sums up Murthy as a person-a person who has had a lifelong anti-gun agenda and is not capable of doing any job without inserting his anti-gun bias into anything and everything-Mr. Murthy would do well to read up on OCD and Hoplophobia.

Murthy is in no way even a fair candidate for surgeon general-he insists that “gun violence”is a “public health” problem.

His solution-register and license firearms-and make gun ownership a disease.

The man thinks it’s just fine to classify an enumerated Constitutional right as a mental illness.

I’ve got news for Mr. Murthy-the only mental illness involved in this issue is his hoplophobia.

99.9% of gun owners are sane-have no mental illnesses, have no propensity to commit crimes of “gun violence”-or any crimes at all.

Mr. Murthy would simply continue his lifelong quest to ban gun ownership.

He is unfit for the job of surgeon general due to his far left political ideology, his lifelong anti-gun crusade, his intentions to make gun ownership a mental illness-and his support of far left causes.

No one who is so focused on idiocy like requiring a license to exercise an enumerated Constitutional right, requiring gun owners to register our firearms, classifying gun owners as having a mental illness, and using the CDC to generate junk “science” to support his anti-gun crusade is fit to be the surgeon general of the United States of America-period.

We’ve seen the CDC junk science to support gun control movie already-we do not need a remake of it.

We already had an administration determined to ban guns-we don’t need a repeat of slick Willie and the “assault weapons” ban,we do not need so-called “universal background checks”-we do not need to have a license required to exercise our second amendment right to keep and bear arms, and we sure as hell are not mentally ill-we sure as hell do NOT need to register our guns.

WE already have an administration that is hostile towards our second amendment right to keep and bear arms-the last thing we need is another member of this admin. in a position where he can use his job to promote his lifelong anti-gun agenda.

The leftists, libtards, progressives and metrosexuals that make up the current admin need to understand that if they fuck with our gun rights any more-in any way-it will be like they kicked a hornet’s nest.

Remember, during the revolutionary war-it only took III% of the population to defeat what was the greatest military on the planet at the time-the English navy ruled the seas, the English army was the largest fighting force in the world at the time-and THREE PERCENT of the population kicked their asses and sent them home to England as a defeated wrold power.

That shit can,and will happen again-you can only kick a sleeping dog so many times before it bites you…

Kicking the hornets nest that is Americas gun owners would be like poking a sleeping grizzly bear-something no sane person does.

The .gov morons who helped create the current police state would like nothing more than to disarm the population-it’s much easier to control the population that way-between creating a blizzard of paperwork that is the United States Code, and the labyrinth of fed and other .gov agency laws, rules, and regs these things makes it so any prosecutor in any state,in any county of the United States can charge and convict anyone they want to,at any time they want to for violating something-or many somethings from the absurd number of laws on the books.

None of this is Constitutional-it is a violation of our civil rights-any and every gun owner charged with any one of these insane laws/rules/regs needs to file a lawsuit for violation of civil rights under Title 42,Section 1983 of the USC…

42 U.S. Code § 1983 – Civil action for deprivation of rights

“Every person who, under color of any statute, ordinance, regulation, custom, or usage, of any State or Territory or the District of Columbia, subjects, or causes to be subjected, any citizen of the United States or other person within the jurisdiction thereof to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured by the Constitution and laws, shall be liable to the party injured in an action at law, suit in equity, or other proper proceeding for redress, except that in any action brought against a judicial officer for an act or omission taken in such officer’s judicial capacity, injunctive relief shall not be granted unless a declaratory decree was violated or declaratory relief was unavailable. For the purposes of this section, any Act of Congress applicable exclusively to the District of Columbia shall be considered to be a statute of the District of Columbia.”

If everyone who was charged with these insane, absurd, obscure laws would demand a jury trial, then sue for the civil rights violation that it is-this bullshit would stop.

The only thing Mr. Murthy is an expert at is attempting to violate the civil rights of all American gun owners-that and being a leftist loon.

Oh yeah-here’s the little gem that started my rant…

“Yet even before Murthy gained fame as Obama’s unlikely pick for America’s top doctor — chosen at an age when most physicians are still struggling to establish their practices and pay off medical school loans — he was offering his unsolicited “expertise” on gun control in correspondence to America’s leaders.  Should he likewise care to offer his musings on combating Ebola, he presumably remembers the addresses of the White House and Capitol and will chime in accordingly.”

Prosecutors must be held accountable

with 3 comments

If they are not, we get a criminal justice system driven by the politics of power, following directions to imprison people that the power structure dislikes. Unlawful prosecutions are where it starts, and it goes stronger if unethical prosecutors doing illegal prosecutions go unpunished. I recently blogged about the innocent man imprisoned for years, thanks to a Brooklyn prosecutor: the man got a $10 million settlement, and the prosecutor, after taking a couple of months of taxpayer-funded vacation, resigned quietly and is living happily, with no actions taken against him.

Now Pamela Colloff has an excellent article in the Texas Monthly that makes a strong case for punishing prosecutors who misuse their powers. She writes:

On September 17, in a decisive 7–2 ruling, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals overturned the capital murder conviction of a Corpus Christi woman named Hannah Overton. Readers of Texas Monthly may recall Overton’s case, which I examined in an article a few years ago called “Hannah and Andrew,” a lengthy story that questioned the assumptions that had led to her prosecution. Overton is one of a number of defendants I have written about in recent years whose convictions have been overturned by the CCA.Michael Morton, who was sentenced to life in prison in 1987 for the murder of his wife, and Anthony Graves, who was sent to death row in 1994 for killing six people, were exonerated after spending a collective 42 years behind bars. Although these three cases are each quite different, they share a common theme: the prosecutors who sought their indictments and secured their convictions should never have tried the cases in the first place.

“Also ask yourself, do you want to live with a hairy woman, with brown patches, oily hair, and flaky skin. If not then buy this book.”

Outstanding point !

Good idea to get the book for the women you know who refuse to store even a weeks worth of food and a couple months of personal hygiene supplies.

Bonus on storing tampons-they work great for bullet wounds-or any other wound that’s bleeding profusely.

Master of Disaster's avatarBlue Haven Beach House

The full title of the book is “Emergency Survival Hygiene, A “Cookbook” for Essential Cleanliness and Survival Hygiene Care. It is by Survivor Jane, I assume that is a pseudonym or maybe her mother was a prepper too.

The book is jam packed with everything a female would need in an apocalyptic situation. It is also about general hygiene and so it is important that way, but women’s needs are more complicated so it does fill a unique nitch.  In many cases men take the lead in prepping and don’t know what women really need and are likely not putting in place those things.  Many women may not have thought through what they might need and want when the SHTF. Reading this book will help.

If you are a female prepper then read this and then pick your preps.  If you are a male and your wife refuses to prep…

Imagine that-the “enhanced screening” did NOT work-something anyone with a functional brain has been pointing out for weeks.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The doctor who has been diagnosed with Ebola in New York City arrived at John F. Kennedy International airport on Oct. 17 and went through the ramped-up screening for travelers from the worst-hit West African countries, officials said on Thursday.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said the patient, who had worked with Ebola patients in Guinea, “participated in the enhanced screening for all returning travelers from these countries” on his arrival at JFK.

“A new group called Prosecutors Against Gun Violence has formed to find solutions to gun violence in the U.S.,” NPR reported Saturday, sharing an interview with the tax-funded public employees behind the effort. “NPR’s Arun Rath speaks with attorneys and co-chairs Cyrus Vance Jr. and Mike Feuer.”

“This fall marks the launch of Prosecutors Against Gun Violence, an independent, non-partisan coalition working toward prosecutorial and policy solutions to the national public emergency of gun violence,” the group says about itself before announcing a Tuesday and Wednesday “summit” in Atlanta. “Our growing coalition includes 23 prosecutors of varied political backgrounds, representing diverse jurisdictions throughout the United States.

“We can augment the enforcement of existing federal law,” the group asserts, revealing a game plan framework. “We can export state and local rules that are working to other states and localities.

“Prosecutors, by and large, are not ideologues,” PAGV insists. “We protect and we serve.”

That’s demonstrably false as far as the group’s front men are concerned. Feuer is a veteran citizen disarmament zealot, as documented for years on The War on Guns blog. For his part, Vance is an award-winning anti-gunner. And rather than “find[ing] solutions to gun violence,” all the group’s efforts will do is give more advantages to criminal predators at the expense of those PAGV claims it works for.

The main event at the gathering in Atlanta was Mark Kelly, husband of Gabby Giffords and co-founder of a national “gun control” group. Kelly’s discussion, per the Associated Press, focused not on prosecuting violent criminals, but rather, on “the need … to counter the powerful gun lobby.”

From Balko…

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-watch/wp/2014/10/22/two-videos-demonstrate-the-immense-power-of-prosecutors/

The first is from Anthony Fischer at Reason.tv. It includes just about every drug war excess imaginable, including a militarized police raid for a nonviolent crime, vaguely written drug laws, prosecutorial misconduct, the coercive use of bond, abuse of conspiracy charges, abuse of the plea bargain and the intimidation of media and witnesses to duck transparency.

The second video is from the conservative criminal justice reform group Right on Crime. It’s about prosecutorial discretion and the criminalization of environmental law. The couple in the video were forbidden from building on a parcel of land they had purchased when, after they had purchased it, it was designated a “wetland,” apparently because a backed-up drainage system had caused some standing water. In addition to being prohibited from building the home they had planned, they were then hit with felony charges.

Adesanya, 23, of Bel Air, Maryland, was then taken to a nearby hospital, said Donovan. Adesanya was later charged with two counts of felony assault on a police officer (K-9), four counts of resisting/unlawful entry, a misdemeanor, and one count of making threats, also a felony.

Kicking a dog that is trying to bite your nuts off is now “assault on a police officer”-felony assault at that.

Just as drug sniffing dogs-which can be trained to “alert” to the presence of drugs on command can not swear oths,or affirm that drugs are in the car or home-a freakin dog can not be a police officer.

This bullshit is so far removed from the Constitution, and the rightful liberty described by the founders it’s beyond absurd.

Only in FUSA could shit like this become law.

Alabama man gets $1,000 in police settlement, his lawyers get $459,000

(Reuters) – An Alabama man who sued over being hit and kicked by police after leading them on a high-speed chase will get $1,000 in a settlement with the city of Birmingham, while his attorneys will take in $459,000, officials said Wednesday.

The incident gained public attention with the release of a 2008 video of police officers punching and kicking Anthony Warren as he lay on the ground after leading them on a roughly 20-minute high-speed chase.

Warren is serving a 20-year sentence for attempted murder stemming from his running over a police officer during the chase, in which he also hit a school bus and a patrol car before crashing and being ejected from his vehicle.
