Is it our imagination, or are gun control supporters really getting “out there” lately? Take Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist Dan Simpson, for example. On Tuesday, Simpson didn’t just exaggerate or engage in hyperbole. If he had, we might not have noticed, because those things are a dime a dozen when you’re talking about gun control supporters.

Simpson instead went off the deep end and then some, as he tried to vilify the NRA, NRA members, and American firearm manufacturers for disagreeing with expanded background checks and an expanded ban on semi-automatic firearms and their magazines.

NRA members, Simpson said, subscribe to conspiracy theories involving black helicopters and the like. But Simpson expressed faith in a few conspiracies of his own, to say the least. For example, Simpson said that he suspects that the recent PBS Frontline hatchet-job on the NRA–which, judging by the piddly number of views its related videos are getting on YouTube, has made little impression on America–was actually a “whitewash” of the NRA, paid for by–who else?–“the gun industry.”

Here’s another. According to Simpson, the reason that American firearm manufacturers have facilities in various states around the country is “to help maximize the impact of their lobbying of members of Congress.” Never mind that Springfield Armory, Beretta, Sturm/Ruger, and Smith & Wesson have facilities in Illinois, Maryland, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, respectively, most of the U.S. senators and representatives of which support gun control.

Simpson even said that he thinks the Secret Service might allow President Obama to be endangered “if he takes on the NRA.” Perhaps Simpson can ask the Secret Service about that, if they pay him a visit to make sure he’s just an anti-gun crank suffering from a poor choice of words, and nothing more.

Either way, we support the right of anti-gun pot stirrers like Simpson to let Americans know exactly how they view the world. It can only contribute to the continued erosion of support for the freedom-throttling gun control laws they demand.

This is why everyone who hunts deer needs to hunt coyotes. This past summer,in late June/early July, I found 3 fawns in one week that were hiding behind condos, two of them were behind the A-C units, since the people who live there, and the township cops ain’t too fond of gunshots in the condo complex-I called them to come and shoot the fawns to end their suffering. two of them had huge chunks missing from their hindquarters, and the wounds were infected-complete with maggots. The township cops told me that they had to shoot an average of 6 fawns a week that had been attacked by ‘yotes in May and June. Not sure how many they had to shoot the rest of the summer,as I was not working much in the area, and didn’t find any more wounded fawns behind homes.

In NE Ohiuo, between fawn and adult deer predation by ‘yotes, the EHD that hit hard in 2012,and last winters extended brutal cold-deer numbers are way down.

The only way to get the population to increase again is to take out as many ‘yotes as possible. Wildlife biologists say that ‘yotes can not be controlled state wide by hunting them-but they can be controlled in local areas,if enough of them are taken.

Whatever your favorite deer hunting area is-get as many guys and gals as you can to start hunting ‘yotes-no bag limit-no closed season. Makes for good target practice too. Another plus is in Ohio, you can hunt ‘yotes with rifles-not just the straight-walled rifle cartridges legal for deer hunting-any rifle caliber is legal for hunting ‘yotes.

I’m going to hunt them with my muzzleloader, then with my crossbow, then with my compound, then with my recurve. My youngest daughter is going to hunt them with a 30-30 to practice for deer hunting in W.Va next year, with her 20 gauge using deer slugs, and with a borrowed 45-70 since that’s legal for deer in Ohio.

Hopefully,we put enough of a hurtin’ on the ‘yote population to improve fawn survival rates by slowing ‘yote predation on the fawns and pregnant does.

If everyone does the same thing in their favorite hunting area-the deer population will rebound quickly-most of those wall-hanger bucks are only 3-3 1/2 years old.

We should all stop taking does,or at least only take one-not the 9 deer total bag limit-1 buck and 8 does- currently in effect for the state-that will help the deer population rebound faster, and cause ‘yote predation to have less of an effect on deer population.

ATF head Jones operates under the watchful eye of AG Holder to enact more executive controls over guns.

ATF head Jones operates under the watchful eye of AG Holder to enact more executive controls over guns.

In its first ruling of 2015, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has held that businesses may not allow individuals to use their equipment to further process incomplete firearm blanks, frames and receivers , attorney Joshua Prince reported Saturday. Such businesses may not assist or provide machinery access to unlicensed individuals without being licensed firearms manufacturers.

The ruling, signed by ATF Director B. Todd Jones on Friday, also holds that the businesses must “identify (mark) any such firearm and maintain manufacturing records,” and that Gun Control Act requirements may not be avoided by allowing persons to perform processes on machinery, tools and equipment a business controls access to. Excluded from the ruling are weapons and devices regulated by the National Firearms Act.

The effect of this ruling will be to close down operations in which persons who are legally entitled to manufacture their own firearms for personal use are permitted by a business to use its equipment, either with instruction or without. Provided such firearms are not intended to be sold or distributed, marking and record-keeping requirements do not apply. By changing the rules, ATF has closed down a means by which people who lack the equipment themselves to finish off a part will be able to exercise their right to build a firearm, a practice many rely on, particularly when completing so-called “80 percent” precursor receivers.

That will not “end an era of 80% lowers,” Prince assesses, “but it will cause a substantial financial impact to the firearms and related industries … Nothing in this Ruling suggests that an individual can no longer manufacture a personal firearm without needing to mark it but the individual must be able to complete the firearm with his/her/its own tools, which causes a plethora of concerns in such process.

“Can a company offer membership, whereby any member is entitled to utilize the company equipment for free, and the member complete his/her/its firearm on the company equipment since the business would not be engage in the business?” he asks. “Do machine shops now need to inquire of the individual as to what he/she/it is going to be utilizing the machinery for?”

The answers to those and more questions are unclear and may be learned by some the hard way. For now, it would appear ATF’s motivation is to shut down as many “lawful” avenues for individuals to exercise their rights without federal oversight as it can.

Since when can the BATFE just make up new laws? Only congress can make new laws, the jackbooted thugs at BATFE can not make up shit as they go to further Holder and Jones’s anti-gun agenda.

Horsepucky like this is yet another in a long list of reasons that people need to set up their own “maker spaces” or Patriot spaces,or whatever you want to call them. We need to set up small shops where we can manufacture stuff to bring in income, there’s all kinds of work that machine shops would rather subcontract out as job lots because some processes are very labor intensive and time consuming-which does not help them pay off the half-million or more dollar turning center they just bought on payments. Most of these jobs only require a lathe, milling machine, drill press, grinders, bandsaw, maybe cutting torches and a wire-feed welder.

Get a few guys-or ladies- together, put all the tools together, then either put all the tools in one garage or pole barn,or have each guy do his-or her-part of the machining process in their garage/pole barn/shop,and you end up with an income source with the added benefit of having the equipment to manufacture anything you want or need to manufacture.

The concept of maker spaces/patriot spaces was brought up on WRSA and by Fabbersmith-now would be a good time to get your maker space together-before Mr. Jones and the BATFE decide no one can purchase a lathe or milling machine without approval from BATFE.

The BATFE leadership and their stormtroopers do not have you best interests in mind as they try to further their anti-gun,anti-freedom agenda.

How to Shoot a Rifle Offhand

Article by David E. Petzal

Beliefs that my generation held as sacred are now null and void. If Capt. John Paul Jones were asked to surrender today, he would not answer “I have not yet begun to fight” but “Let’s work this out. Violence is never the answer, and all these dead bodies in the ocean are an environmental hazard.”

Also, we can’t seem to shoot offhand anymore. We no longer walk; we sit. And thanks to the current long-range craze, the idea of sneaking to get a closer shot at something is as alien as going afield without four electronic devices that you consult every two and a half minutes.

Stand and Deliver
Shooting from your hind legs like a man (or a woman, or whatever makes your heart happy) is by far the most difficult of all the positions. It requires exponentially more practice than any other simply to be competent, never mind good. And it is still absolutely necessary to master, unless you enjoy papering the walls of your home with unpunched licenses.

Offhand, Easily, Sort Of
The secret to shooting offhand is to accept that no one can hold a rifle steady while perched on his hind legs. No one. So don’t try to eliminate muzzle movement; instead, control it. Develop the finesse to make the end of the barrel move in a circle and to make that circle smaller and smaller as you aim. Then, the instant the crosshairs are on any part of the bull’s-eye, pull the trigger. Crude as this approach may seem, a great many of your shots will land in the center of the bull anyway.

The other thing you must do is shoot fast—because bucks won’t stand around waiting for you. An aimed offhand shot should take you no more than five seconds, and three is better. The longer you wait, the more likely you’ll screw up.

The Range Regimen
Here’s how to practice shooting offhand: Get a .22 rifle, as close a match to your centerfire as possible. Get as much ammo as you can buy, beg, or extort. Get a package of 100 NRA A-17 paper targets, each of which has 11 black bull’s-eyes about the size of a silver dollar.
Set your scope at 4X and start from 20 feet. Shoot strings of five rounds per bull; a hit anywhere in the black counts. Zero hits through two is pathetic; three is so-so; four is not bad at all; and five is outstanding. Your initial efforts are likely to be so bad that you will go into shock and require hospitalization.

As you improve, move back to 25 yards. Once you are shooting mostly fours and fives, switch to your centerfire rifle, and shoot from 100 yards at an NRA 50-yard pistol target with an 8-inch bull. Shoot no more than 20 rounds per session, and try to get all of them in the black. Very few shooters can do this; if you can get 18 or 19 into the 10-ring, you’ve done very well.

Finally, remember two things: First, practicing offhand is logistically easier, cheaper, and more valuable to real hunters than practicing at long range will ever be. So there’s no excuse not to do it. Second, shooting is a sport of muscle memory, repptitian, and concentration, so shoot lots. And good luck getting the .22 ammo.

House and Senate negotiators are nearing a $1.1 trillion spending deal to avert a government shutdown, Politico reported Sunday. Their goal is to file the measure today and bring it to a floor vote by Thursday, when the current funding stops.

Gun Owners of America warned against doing exactly what the Republican leadership is planning in a November 17 alert. Rather than effectively giving current seated Democrats the power to shape the agenda through to next September, GOA instead called on members to generate pressure for a short term continuing resolution, a measure that would keep the government going until the new majority was seated.

It appears that call went unheeded, and the GOP is set to cede much of the control it was elected to exert. That this will work against the interests of those who put them in power, particularly against gun owners, is elaborated on in the GOA alert.

Noting it was largely due to the gun rights vote that Republicans captured the Senate and widened their lead in the House, what will change as a result, if anything, is unclear. If restrictions remain unchallenged, it will recall the many times rules objectionable to gun owners have quietly been allowed to remain in place. Still, there is one change that could be insisted on now, and if it derailed the spending approval process either in a Harry Reid-controlled Senate, or if Barack Obama rejected it, that decision would fall squarely on the Democrats: Congress could, if it wanted to, restore funding to allow for relief of firearms disabilities — or at least it could after January if it passed a short term resolution and left the long term bill for the incoming majority.

Per the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, “prohibited persons” convicted of state-level offenses can contact their state attorney general to learn their options for civil rights restoration. Federal offenses currently require a presidential pardon, with other lawful options provided for in the Gun Control Act of 1968 closed off due to an appropriations technicality, once implemented due to maneuvering by Sen. Charles Schumer.

“The bill continues anti-gun boilerplate such as the Senator Schumer amendment defunding the McClure-Volkmer disabilities relief program,” GOA warned in January, the last time an appropriations bill was sent to the president. “This means that thousands upon thousands of Americans who are disqualified from owning firearms because of non-violent federal felonies have no way to get their gun rights back.”

Assuming the “Cromnibus” bill will not be stopped, eliminating that “boilerplate” would be the first of many steps Republicans could take to actually earn the trust they have been tentatively extended. If it remains, and if an amendment is not even offered or debated on, gun owners will have a fair indication of what they can continue to expect after January.

AK-47 maker Kalashnikov gives rifles makeover

Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the Kalashnikov assault rifle

The Russian manufacturer of the AK-47 assault rifle has unveiled a new look for its guns, as well as a new logo, at a glitzy event in Moscow.

The company is also branching out into fashion, launching a line of branded survival gear.

The firm, which relies heavily on the export market, is among the targets of Western sanctions imposed over Russia’s role in the Ukraine conflict.

The Kalashnikov, or AK-47, is one of the world’s most recognisable weapons.

The gun is relatively cheap as well as easy to manufacture and maintain, contributing to its popularity with guerrilla forces and national armies in Asia and Africa.

It is thought that more than 100 million Kalashnikov rifles have been sold worldwide. The inventor of the rifle, Soviet Lt-Gen Mikhail Kalashnikov, died last year.

At Tuesday’s event in Moscow, the manufacturer – now known as Kalashnikov Concern – revealed a new logo featuring the letters K and C.

Women in tight black dresses wandered around holding AK-47 ammunition cartridges, while an orchestra played patriotic Russian classics, the Moscow Times reported.

According to the website of Russia Today, the manufacturer also has two new slogans – “Protecting Peace” in English, and “Weapons of Peace” in Russian.

The company says it sold 140,000 guns in 2014 – double the figure for the previous year.

Kalashnikov CEO Alexei Krivoruchko said the firm intended to modernise production with a view to making 300,000 weapons annually by 2020.

Western sanctions have reportedly stalled an order for some 200,000 rifles intended for sale in the US and Canada.

“The US market was very important for us,” the Moscow Times quoted Mr Krivoruchko as saying.

The sanctions have also led to the cancellation of a marketing campaign featuring Hollywood action hero Steven Seagal, Agence France-Presse reports.

Ohio’s Deer Gun Season 12/1-12/7 2014

Just a few words on the Ohio gun season.

Doe tags are NOT valid anywhere in Ohio during gun season-if you have a doe tag,go hunt tomorrow and Sunday with your bow or crossbow, take a nice fat doe,so you have the meat for your freezer, and so the tag isn’t wasted-unless you just want to give ODNR an extra 15 bucks-in that case, don’t use your bow to take a doe, just waste the tag you paid for.

Hunting hours are 1/2 hour before sunrise,to 1/2 hour after sunset.

Ohio sunrise/sunset tables…

Sunrise/Sunset Tables

            Sunrise/Sunset State Map

Eastern Ohio

Eastern Ohio Sunrise/Sunset Table

Western Ohio

Western Ohio Sunrise/Sunset Table

You can take only 1 buck anywhere in the state, you can take up to 9 deer total,by taking no more than the limit for each county,or you can take 1 deer each from 9 counties, etc. The limit is still only 1 buck,no matter what county you take it in.

Hunting any wild animal (except waterfowl)from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset during the youth deer gun season, deer gun season, the antlerless deer muzzleloader season, and the muzzleloader deer season is unlawful unless the hunter is visibly wearing a vest, coat, jacket, or coveralls that are either solid hunter orange or camouflage hunter orange. This requirement applies statewide on both public and private land.

hunter orange example

Pay attention to property lines-do not trespass on private property.

Written permission is REQUIRED to hunt on private property that you do not own.

You must have the written permission with you when hunting private property that you do not own.

Make sure you have your license and tags with you.

Make sure you have the correct type of blaze orange vest, which must be worn during deer gun season-unless you are hunting waterfowl.

Be sure that you know the hunting rules/regs.

If you are charged with a hunting violation that results in loss of hunting privileges, your hunting privileges are also lost in every state except Mass. and Nebraska-so, unless you want to only hunt in Nebraska and Mass.-don’t violate the hunting regs !!!

Rifles that use straight walled cartridges are legal this year-about time.

You can also hunt with a handgun next week…

  • Handgun: with 5-inch minimum length barrel, using straight-walled cartridges .357 caliber or larger.
  • Straight-walled cartridge rifles in the following calibers: .357 Magnum, .357 Maximum, .38 Special, .375 Super Magnum, .375 Winchester, .38-55, .41 Long Colt, .41 Magnum, .44 Special, .44 Magnum, .444 Marlin, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .45 Long Colt, .45 Winchester Magnum, .45 Smith & Wesson, .454 Cassull, .460 Smith & Wesson, .45-70, .45-90, .45-110, .475 Linebaugh, .50-70, .50-90, .50-100, .50-110, and .500 Smith & Wesson.

It is legal to take more than one deer a day,as long the first deer has been tagged.

Good luck to everyone hunting-be safe-practice safe gun handling like you learned in hunter’s safety class-be sure of your target and what’s behind it-there’s a half million hunters in the woods for Ohio’s gun season.

We all know that Gabby Giffords was injured in a murderous attack by a deranged Democrat activist. We know that she suffered serious brain trauma and needed more than a year to regain even partial mobility and speech. We also know that she has staged a remarkable recovery becoming the figurehead of a gun control operation started by her husband, Mark Kelly. Rep. Giffords and Capt. Kelly often point out that they are not anti-gun and make show of buying, owning, and shooting guns.

Since we know all of that about Gabby Giffords, let me tell you about someone you don’t know; or maybe you do. We’ll call him Larry to protect his privacy. As with so many working-class American gun owners, Larry is a patriot, and when others were burning draft cards, he volunteered for the US Army. He suffered a traumatic brain injury from grenade shrapnel in Vietnam and, like Gabby, had to relearn simple things like walking, talking, and feeding himself. He never completely recovered, and the couple made due with Larry’s small disability pension and what his wife earned cleaning other people’s houses. One of his few joys has been getting out into nature and hunting – for the solitude he finds, and for meat – or just tinkering and plinking.

Age and health issues caught up with Larry’s wife a few years ago, putting the family in crisis. Larry’s VA benefits advisor told them that they could get more help from the government based on problems Larry was having managing their money. By agreeing that Larry was unable to handle his financial affairs, and having his wife appointed fiduciary for him, his disability payment would go up by an extra thousand dollars a month.

The couple grasped at the opportunity. A few weeks later I got a tearful call from Larry and his wife, looking for my advice. A letter had arrived from the VA informing them that Larry’s disability status was being upgraded. Then the letter said that Larry’s name would be forwarded to the FBI for inclusion in the National Instant Check System as someone who is “mentally incompetent,” and that he would be prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. The VA advised that all firearms and ammunition in the home must be removed, and that ever allowing Larry to have access to a firearm or ammunition would be a federal felony.

No one suggested that Larry is a danger to himself or anyone else. No one suggested that he is violent or unstable, or that anyone in the world will be safer or better off if Larry is not allowed to have access to firearms, but in order to get the help they needed, Larry must lose his right to arms for the rest of his life
